AEGON Global Pensions and Mercer addressed a discussion on longevity and exhibited together with colleagues from AEGON Trustee Solutions at the Professional Pensions Show in London.
The Professional Pensions Show took place at the ExCel Centre, London on 17 and 18 November, 2010. More than 1,000 delegates attended this event.
Conference programme
The 2010 programme featured an impressive range of sessions covering the industry’s hot topics.
In the first of two plenary sessions Adrian Waddingham, Senior Partner at Barnett Waddingham answered questions of June Mulroy, Executive Director of Business Delivery at The Pensions Regulator and Martin Clarke, Director of Financial Risk at The Pension Protection Fund.
The second plenary session was chaired by Mike Sullivan, President, The Pensions Management Institute. Titled A pension manager’s view: the challenges facing pension schemes – what they are and how they can be addressed, Christine Jackson, Director of Pensions at ITV and Roy Platten, Pensions Manager at Volkswagen Group UK discussed the issues and how they are approaching them.

Fresh approaches to managing and mitigating risks
Representing AEGON Global Pensions on the distinguished speaker programme was Chris Madsen, Head of Risk Structuring & Transfer at AEGON N.V. Chris was joined by Andrew Ward, Senior Consultant Risk & Longevity at Mercer, to discuss Fresh approaches to managing and mitigating risks. The session focused on longevity swaps – how they work, their practical application and how they can help schemes and sponsoring employers manage risk. This was a well attended session with a variety of questions from the floor.
Voting results
The audience was asked if they are planning longevity hedging. 29% answered "yes, within the next two years" and 18% "yes, but in more than two years time" (54% do not plan longevity hedging at all). 49% of the audience expects a higher volume in the longevity market three years from now and 26% expects about the same volume (13% expects a lower volume and 13% didn't know).
AEGON Global Pensions was represented by Andrew Wood, Regional Sales Director and Iain Stringer, International Sales Manager. Many new contacts and old acquaintances were made by Andrew and Iain.
